Get rid of the Courthouse. I am new to this, and my intention is not to offend anyone in this wonderful community where I call home, but from the time I moved here, almost 17years ago, I have thought that the current Courthouse building in the middle of the downtown square seemed out of place, and was the most imposing out of place building I have ever seen. When I saw old photos I realized why, it is not what was originally built as a courthouse on the site. The original building of this county seat, was a typical southern courthouse with character, like many of the courthouses in small communities throughout Tennessee. It had wrap around porches, tall windows, and grassy areas for benches and people. When the wood structure burned to the ground, many years ago this behemoth was built on the same site with a totally different architecture style reminiscent of a 1930’s modernization, and is an absolute eye-sore. It blocks the feng-shui of the square, businesses have a hard time, because it gives the square a strange feeling, and if not removed this town square will never revive. It is too big, it is too old, it is too ugly. I was amazed when there was actually people who thought like I do and had started a petition to get rid of it! (perhaps only because it is beyond repair) Wow! Then I was shocked that so many people want it to stay! Why???? Its not the original building!! Many of the buildings in Gallatin, TN truly are Historic! This one is not!!!! If you really want to save something, take that one down, build one like the original, and turn some of the land around it into a park. There are old photos still available how it was designed. This one is not a landmark. It is just an out-dated old building that should have never been added to the Square in the first place. I vote for getting rid of it!! Happy New Year!
